Keep running into this same error when running the upgrader onto the primary leg of our Windows 2012 R2 IaaS web server.  We have already completed the following pre-reqs, but they have not resolved the issue:

  • Disable secondary Web server in load balancer configuration and shut off IIS in secondary web server
  • Upgrade to .NET Framework 4.5
  • Obtain new updated Symantec signed cert and import into IIS and update binding
  • Add entry to hosts file to re-direct traffic from load balancer to local server
  • Run Brian Graf’s pre-req PS automation script successfully (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2013/12/vmware-vcloud-automation-center-6-pre-req-automation-script.html)
  • Create BackConnectionHostNames registry key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0

Design Canvas - Is it that useful?

$

When I first saw the Design Canvas I thought it was brilliant. But as time goes on I find I'm replacing more and more of its functionality with XaaS services. For example:

We are using an NSX Universal Transport Zone so cant use it for firewall rules via the Service Composer

We need the ability to deploy HA Load Balancers so cant use it for On-Demand Load Balancers

I can't bind an action-generated field in the VM to a field in the deployment so will need to deploy via a single XaaS form.

We are deploying fairly controlled applications with a repeatable pattern so if using multi-machine blueprints we typically end up with a blueprint per-application and per reservation (prod, pre=prod etc) to set the networks, so the blueprint sprawl could be huge. I wanted to use Application Services to deploy applciations but it seems this can only be done at deployment time so again requires separate blueprints for each application, and wont allow us to use generic 3-tier application stack blueprints. I think its useful for devops teams to quickly put together a blueprint which will be used for non-prod test environments but that's about it. Interested to hear ways other people are using them, and whether I am missing something

Import VRA Basic Clone VM Workflow into Built-In vRO?

$

Hello All-

I'm just getting started with vRO in VRA 7.2 as I am looking to do some things with my workflows that don't seem to be able to be done with basic blueprints, such as executing SSH/Powershell scripts on remote hosts outside of the vRA deployment.  I was windering though, is there an easy way to import the workflow that vRA uses when creating a basic clone vsphere VM blueprint into vRO?  I don't really want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to and create a Clone VM workflow from scratch in vRO to do everything that the vRA workflow already does.  It would be nice if I could somehow import it and start with that as my base and then add what I need to it.  Does anyone know of a way or am I stuck with creating my workflows from scratch starting with the vRO library workflows?

Accessing Custom Properties of a VM via REST API

$

Accessing the vRA REST API, I have been able to authenticate, get a token, and make various REST calls for various entities. For example, I can get a list of the VMs in vRA by calling to: https://[vraserver]/catalog-service/api/consumer/resources

From that, I can specify a specific VM by adding /[id] to the end.

However, what I cannot seem to do is figure out how to access the various Custom Properties that we have set on each VM. It doesn't appear to be a piece of information returned with the machine data.

I've been poking around the REST Resources documentation, but short of trial and error, I'm not seeing how to find/access a VM's (or any other entity's) Custom Properties and their values.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,

For the E2E Test Case  : “ Automate new hire onboarding“ while I Request a machine  As a Consumer, It will redirect to the New Request Page. In the Request Information page while selecting  Tenant, Business Group and Approval Policy then inside the select option the required options are not visible and getting the error "Unable to create a new user: InternalError: Failed to create user account... ASD is it possible to assign cost to a custom action / custom resource?

$

Say I have and IaaS VM provisioned via standard blueprint. Then I want to add resource action "add to backup regime" and charge then daily price for this service.

Can't anything related to costs in Advanced Service Design --> Authoring Services with Advanced Service DesignerPDF.

Is something like this possible? How would I go about it?

If above is not possible, could I assign cost to a provisioned Custom resource that I would provision via Service blueprint?

Bug Report: vRealize Automation REST API generates invalid JSON data

$
0
0

This was tested with vRealize Automation v. 6.2.3

The issue

when using vRA REST API to get data as JSON, it's possible that this data includes ASCII control characters.

By JSON specification it's not valid to include double quotes (0x22), backslashes (0x5C) or any control characters (0x00 till 0x1F and 0x7F) inside string literals.

Example

We try to get a list of resourceOperations. it's possible that those operations are custom day 2 operations.

Such operations are allowed to have a description field, which may include ASCII control characters, e.g. it may include a newline formed by CR+LF (0x0D0A).

An example request may look like this: HTTP GET /api/consumer/resources/{resourceId}/actions

The response (truncated) may look like this:

{   "links": [   ],   "content": [      {       {          "@type": "ConsumerResourceOperation",          "name": "My custom action",          "description": "This is the action description  including a newline control character.",          "iconId": "cad71fb0-d760-4abc-bc8c-f7014d0c455a",          "type": "ACTION",          "id": "cad71fb0-d760-4abc-bc8c-f7014d0c455a",          "extensionId": null,          "providerTypeId": "com.vmware.csp.core.designer.service",          "bindingId": "556a370e-81e4-480a-86ee-9557d12aab84",          "hasForm": "true",          "formScale": "BIG"       },   [...]   }   [...]
}

As you can see, the response is not valid JSON because it includes a newline character. If you try to convert it into a JSON object, most parsers (the JSON spec. compliant one) will fail. This is also true for the (yet unofficial) JSON parser included inside vRealize Orchestrator, e.g.

var restClient = cafeHost.createRestClient(vCACCAFEServicesEnum.CATALOG_SERVICE);
var response = restClient.get("consumer/resources/"+ressource.getId()+"/actions");

var responseBodyAsString = response.getBodyAsString();  // works
var responseBodyAsJSON = response.getBodyAsJson();      // will fail with error "SyntaxError: String contains control character"
var jsonData = JSON.parse(responseBodyAsString);        // will fail with error "SyntaxError: String contains control character"

Implications

While this was tested for resourceOperations, it may be true for other JSON data returned by the vRealize Automation REST API.

Requested fix

Any generated JSON data from vRealize Automation should be checked for unsupported characters and, if any are found, those should be removed or escaped using the JSON escape sequences before any response is send.

In addition a JSON linter should be included for the REST API unit tests in order to help identify such issues.

vRA 6.2 Iaas Plugin

Hi All,

I am new to vRA and recently installed Havana plugin on Iaas server. I can see there lots of plugins for endpoint in side folder "Model Manager Data" but when I login to vRA and navigate to Infra ->endpoint ->endpoint, to create a openstack end point I can see only limited endpoint. vRA in our organization is enterprise licensed. Can you please let me know how to register missing plugins to vRA. We are trying to connect IBM PowerVC to vRA.

Thanks,

vRA API to Create, Apply & Delete Machine Snapshots?

$
0
0

Hi all,

I'd like to be able to utilise the vRA API external to vmware to create a Snaphot for an active VM.  Then I'd like to use the API again to 'Apply' and 'Delete' that created Snapshot when I need to.

This is effectively simulating the functionality on the standard web portal, after selecting an Item name, choosing the Snapshots tab and carrying out the 'New Snapshot' functionality first, then the Apply or Delete option on the snapshot entry itself.

The API documentation doesn't seem to cover this in either the core reference or API use cases.

I've used Chrome advanced tools to capture/debug actual web portal actions - that usually gives a clue as to any methods being called and how the API data model is being used.  In the case of snapshots I get references to createSnapshot.aspx POST but the data in the requests seems pretty basic.

Has anyone managed to work out how to create and manipuate machine Snapshots using the API?

My vRA is version 6.2.x in case that helps.

Thanks in advance for any comments & suggestions.

FJBob.

How to export and import Build Profiles and Data Dictionary

$

I have looked at the documentation and examples for CloudClient 3.4 and 4.0 and didn't see anything (obvious) for exporting and importing Build Profiles and Data Dictionary items. We are upgrading from vCAC 6.0.1.1 to vRA 6.2.3 via greenfield deployment. Recreating the Build Profiles and Data Dictionary by hand is tedious and error prone. I was hoping to export from vCAC 6.0 and import to 6.2.3. I'm hoping to do the same between our prod and non-prod instances of vRA 6.2.3 too.

Unclosed token error during REST API call

$

Using a third party automation tool, the vCloud Director REST API is used to get information about the virtual Datacenter. The REST call results in the following (truncated?) XML response, and subsequent error during parsing.

This is using ElectricCommander with vCloud Director 5.5.5. This does not occur with vCloud Director 5.1.

Any ideas what could cause this truncation from the vCD side? Is this even possible? Or would you suggest this is more of a client side (requestor) issue?

I can tell you the REST API call is executed using the PERL command - $::browser->request($req);

In addition, the same REST API URL used  in the Chrome Advanced REST Client utility results in a full XML Result, not truncation.

During my testing, with vCD 5.5.5, I have found that XML responses smaller than 10KB seem to be fine, but more than 10KB fail. Yet, with vCD 5.1, a 61KB response still succeeds.

GET vDC Info

Any ideas?

first of all check it and see we have a connection or not perhaps it would be like this

//////////////////////////////////////////////////

     public class CreateVm{

          public static void main(String[] args){

               if(!wehaveconnection)

                    System.out.print("we cant find the esxi server or any connection");

               }

               else{

                    create a vm;

               }

          }

     }

//////////////////////////////////////////////////

and if we have connection

create a vm on esxi

considering getting this information

1.name (for vm name)

2.how much ram

Rest call to update 'Cores per socket' property of a VM

$

Team,

I am trying to automate the process of deploying VMs in Vcloud. One of the steps is to update VM properites(Memory,CPU etc.)

I am using a rest call to update Memory and CPU information. However, i am not able to update 'Cores per Socket' property using a rest call.

A very similar rest call is used in both cases but one property is updated and the other is not. what could be the reason? Is there any other way i could update the cores per socket property?

I would appreciate if anyone would help me in identifying the problem here.

Thanks,

Vinay.

Are there any API calls available in VRA 7.1 to Create Fabric Groups / Enterprise Admin Group, assign Fabric Administrator Role and Compute Resources?

I found some vRO Workflows to create Fabric Groups. But not one to Assign Fabric Admin Role or add Compute resources to it.

Hi,

I am planning to use VRA 7.x/6.x Java SDK to do following operations for environment provisioning:

  1. Create/Update VM from template.
  2. Create load balancer and attached VMs.
  3. Connect VM using SSH via java code.

I am referring VRA 7.x Java SDK and java API documentation from below URL:

https://developercenter.vmware.com/web/sdk/7.0.0/vrealize-automation

There are 1000 of classes created under package "com.vmware.vcac.*". I am unable to find out sample java code which will give me an idea about, How to use Java SDK classes for environment provisioning using VRA?

Can anyone provide me any reference document which will help me to do so?

Thanks,

Mitul Shah

vRA 7.2 support for Azure GovCloud Subscriptions

Does anyone know if vRA 7.2 supports adding Azure GovCloud subscription as avRA endpoint?

Note: the Service URI (https://manage.windowsazure.us) and Login URL (https://portal.azure.us) for the Azure GovCloud is different from the commercial service; and the VMware documentation is vague at best. REF: Create a Microsoft Azure Endpoint

NOTE: There is a great blog written about adding an Azure endpoint, but there is no reference to the Azure GovCloud instances, nor does it work when I try to use the Azure GovCloud Service URI and Login URL.  REF: http://www.vaficionado.com/2016/11/using-new-microsoft-azure-endpoint-vrealize-automation-7-2/
